Winter in Germany can be REALLY cold! The last two years we were buried in snow but this year we haven't had hardly any. But, we recently we spent more than two weeks without even reaching 10 degrees Fahrenheit! Brrrrr!!!
I love that the house we live in has a wood burning stove. We heat the first floor with it and save a TON of money in heating costs. Not only that, but there's just something about a warm, glowing fire each day. It's so calming. I love it!!
The only problem is keeping the glass door clean. When the weather isn't so cold, I have time to clean it in the morning. Before we light a fire, I can clean it and it's ready to go for the rest of the day. But…when it's so cold, my husband lights a fire before he leaves for work so the rooms downstairs have time to warm up before Maia (and I!) wake up. During the day, I keep the fire going and the stove stays hot for hours after we've gone to bed. When that happens, there isn't time to clean it…and it gets VERY dirty!
When it warmed up enough, I was able to clean the glass in the morning. I had my natural Shaklee products: Scour Off Heavy Duty Paste and Basic H2. I also use the same sponge on the glass each time (you can see it's stained from the soot) and a paper towel to wipe it clean at the end.
I told you it was filthy!
This is a view from the inside:
Here I am scooping a tiny bit of Scour Off paste onto my finger. (My wonderful husband took the pictures for me! Thanks, babe!!) Scour Off is non-toxic. It's made with cherry pits, not harmful chemicals! It smells yummy and works wonders without being abrasive.
You can see that I really only needed a tiny bit! Shaklee's cleaning products are ultra concentrated - YOU add the water. No sense paying for water when you have it at home!
I wet the sponge a little and started scrubbing. (On a flat surface I would wet the sponge more, but since it's vertical it drips if I wet the sponge too much.)
I scrubbed for about 45 seconds and then sprayed it with Shaklee's Basic H2 diluted to window cleaner. (It's a 16 ounce bottle with only a couple drops of Basic H2 in it!! Talk about cheap and effective!!!)
I wiped it dry with a paper towel and it was sparkling!
Here's a shot from the front. You can see the half I cleaned and the other, really dirty half!
Now I just needed to finish the other half. I rinsed my sponge and scrubbed the dirty half of the door for a few seconds.
I sprayed it with the window cleaner and wiped it dry. All done!! Look how great it looks! You can see the reflection of the dining room table and chairs in it!! You can also see right through into the stove! Sparkly :)
And then it was time for another fire. I love that warm, flickering light and the sound of logs popping.
I especially love lighting a fire when the door is clean and I can see inside!
