Disinfecting with Shaklee's Basic G {Germicide}

After our weekend in Sicily, I had a lot of disinfecting to do!  We came home with LOTS of laundry in ziplock bags.  I did my best to keep everything separated, but living in a hotel we didn't exactly have any resources to wash clothes or disinfect our stuff.  We were washing what we could in the hotel sink and shower with a bar of hand soap!  Not exactly ideal…

I couldn't wait to get home to one of my favorite products: Shaklee's Basic G.  It's a germicide and I knew it would eliminate any virus that might reinfect us.  Maia knew we had a lot of work ahead of us…

I used it to clean our laundry and everything else we touched over the weekend!  I thought I should write a post to let everyone know about our safer alternative to Bleach and Lysol - and how to use it!

Since I wasn't sure where we had picked up the virus, I decided to disinfect anything we had with us over the weekend, but also anything Maia had touched before we left on Friday.  Her new table and chairs were high on my list and apparently she was watching me because she grabbed a bottle of Shaklee Basic H2 and a paper towel and started cleaning the chairs too!  She cracks me up!

Shaklee's Basic G is the safest disinfectant on the market: non-flammable, biodegradable, and non-toxic.  It cleans, disinfects, and deodorizes in 1 easy step!  (Once mixed, use it within 30 days.)

Mix 3/8 teaspoon into a 16oz spray bottle.
Mix 1 tablespoon into a gallon of water.

Because it's so concentrated, a little goes a long way and will really save you money!

Basic G has a 3 year shelf life.  Its residual effectiveness lasts up to three days after application.  (Chlorine bleach used as a disinfectant is effective for no more than an hour!)

It kills up to 99% of bacteria!

Some of the many uses of Basic G:
  • garbage pails
  • toilets
  • diaper pails
  • sinks and faucets
  • showers
  • pet areas
  • countertops
  • cutting boards (not around food!)
  • floors
  • after preparing eggs, chicken, and meat to kill Salmonella
  • door knobs
  • laundry

It even makes a great non-toxic weed killer!
1 gallon water
1 tablespoon of Shaklee Basic G
1/2 cup of white vinegar
Now you don't have to worry about the kids or the dogs walking in the yard after you spray!

For diapers and other problem jobs: Add 1 teaspoon per load to deodorize and disinfect.

Safe to use as an air freshener.
Safe for stainless steel and aluminum.
It is safe to use on hard, non-porus surfaces.
Great for disinfecting throughout your house.
EPA registered.
One quart makes up to 64 gallons.
Basic G kills 32 pathogens while Lysol only kills 8 pathogens.

One question we've heard over the years is about the labeling on the bottle: "If it's non-toxic, why are there warnings on the bottle?"
According to EPA standards, bottles must be labeled according to what's IN the bottle.  Now remember, more than 80,000 products are not registered with the EPA or labeled correctly.  (This is another example of Shaklee and their reputation for integrity…)  So when it comes to the concentrated form of Basic G, if what is IN the bottle were to be consumed, it would be toxic by EPA standards.  However, in it's properly diluted form it is completely non-toxic and not harmful at all.  Shaklee did not put it in the Get Clean line because the advertising of that line is all Non-Toxic.  While Basic G is non-toxic when diluted it is not in its concentrated form, thus they left it out of the line.

Basic G Germicide is effective against the following pathogens (6/96):
  • Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Salmonella choleraesuis
  • Candida albicans
  • Acinetobacter calcoaceticus
  • Bordetella bronchiseptica
  • Chlamydia psittaci
  • Fusobacterium necrophorum
  • Listeria monocytogenes
  • Pasteurella multocida
  • Salmonella enteritidis
  • Enterobacter cloacae
  • Enterobacter aerogenes
  • Proteus vulgaris
  • Salmonella typhimurium
  • Shigella flexneri
  • Salmonella typhi
  • Staphylococcus aureus (methicillen resistant) (MRSA)
  • Shigella sonnei
  • Serratia marcescens
  • Trichophyton mentagrophytes
  • Influenza A/Hong Kong
  • Herpes simplex type I
  • Herpes simplex type II
  • Vaccinia
  • Rubella (German Measles)
  • Adenovirus type 4
  • Feline picornavirus
  • Feline leukemia
  • Canine distemper
  • Rabies
  • Pseudorables
  • Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis
  • Infectious bronchitis (Avian IBV)
  • Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
  • Transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGE)
  • Escherichia coli
  • Proteus mirabilis
  • Streptococcus faecalis
  • Staphylococcus aureus
  • Kelbsiella pneumoniae
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • Staphylococcus epidermidis
  • Aspergillus niger

I love knowing that I can kill germs and not use all of the harsh chemicals to do so.  Basic G is a safe alternative to any disinfectant and works better!

To read more about Basic G or to order yours today, please visit my online Shaklee site.

Shaklee also carries Germ Off Disinfecting Fragrance Free Wipes in their Get Clean Line.  It kills odor-causing bacteria found on hard, non-porous household, kitchen, and bathroom surfaces.  It's great for cleaning around the toilet.  It leaves your bathroom and kitchen fresh and clean.  It's the smart way to clean and disinfect.  I use these often and I try to always have some in my bag to use on the go.  You can recycle them too!

Now I feel better knowing that I've disinfected everything in our home safely.  I'm glad we've made the switch to Basic G.  Now I can clean and disinfect without worrying about harsh chemicals or harmful fumes!

  1. I know you said Basic G is ok for pet areas; so do you think it's ok to use to clean the cats litter box? I have some but have been scared to use it because of the warnings on the bottle. Very helpful post. Thanks!

  2. Could you help me? I have read on your blog and other places that that the diluted Basic G solution can be used within a month. However, the container I have says that the diluted solution should be discarded each day and made fresh each day. why the discrepancy? Do you have some documentation of the fact that the diluted Basic G solution is still effective after a week or a month?
