Happy Birthday, Maia!

Today is Maia's 1st Birthday!

It's hard to believe an entire year has passed already.  We had a rough start and after issues with acid reflux and aspiration, it feels great to say Maia is doing wonderful!  She no longer takes PrevAcid for her reflux and after getting a good report at Landstuhl, no longer needs thickened liquids.  YAY!  Our last remaining hurdle is figuring out if she still has sensitivities to dairy and soy.  We'll start slowly reintroducing them to her over the next few months.  Hopefully her intolerance was just a result of her immature immune system. If not, we're already in the habit of reading labels.  It won't be easy to avoid dairy and soy for a lifetime, but it certainly won't be the end of the world.  We'll have to wait and see!

Tonight, Romas, Maia, and I will spend time together celebrating.  We have such a beautiful little girl who makes us smile and laugh each and every day.  She's learned so much already and seems to revel in her ability to make people laugh.  She has an incredible personality and has brought so much joy to us and her extended family and friends over the past year.

Maia is...

a joker - always making faces and trying to get a laugh.

a free spirit - dancing, laughing, and cheering all day.

a social butterfly - never missing an opportunity to smile and wave!

a sweetheart - giving her mommy and daddy lots of hugs!  She snuggles her stuffed animals and always pats her doggies as she passes by.

Happy Birthday, Little Bee.
We love you!

Maia Shops for DVDs

Pin It We have quite an extensive DVD collection.  We're going on year 5 in Germany with little to no TV and no English movies.  Since we don't pay for cable, we use the money to buy movies instead.  We shop the discount websites and can usually find great movies for $5 each!

Maia has recently become obsessed with "re-organizing" our DVDs.  Luckily, she can still only reach the bottom couple rows because she yanks them off the shelves and tosses them on the ground.

Maia keeps me busy throughout the day.  I think I probably re-stock the shelves at least 5 times a day.  I've given up trying to keep them organized…much to Romas' dismay.  He likes the movies organized by genre, which is really helpful when we have so many to choose from.  Maia disagrees.

Gratitude Journal

We speak a lot of what we are grateful for during the holiday season.  It's a wonderful gesture and a time of year that reminds us to cherish the 'little things' in life.

But what about the rest of the year?  Do we take time each day to give thanks for the 'little things' we have?  I certainly don't.  And it's a shame.

So starting on January 1, I'll be keeping a Gratitude Journal.  I want to make a conscious effort each day to reflect and give thanks for the 'little things' that make me smile.

I bought this journal from Monika of iloveitall on Etsy.  It it a mixed media journal with 53 pages - enough for a page a week.  Each journal is made to order by Monika, so it takes a couple weeks to make and ship to you.  Mine arrived really fast.

Look how cute the pages are!

I love it!  It will look adorable on my desk or nightstand so I can leave it out to jot down my gratitude each day.

The book is spiral bound and comes with additional embellishments.

It will be nice to spend a moment reflecting each day.  Too often we go through our busy days without taking the time to think about our blessings.  The holiday season shouldn't be the only time of the year that we show our gratitude.  It will only take a moment to write down what I am thankful for each day and by the end of the year, I'll have an entire book of wonderful thoughts.

Do you keep a Gratitude Journal?

Homemade Baby Wipes

Did you all read my post about the hidden dangers of baby shampoo?  If you haven't already, you need to read it.  It will make you shudder.

When I found out I was pregnant, I did a lot of research about conventional products and, the more information I found, the more I started to look into organic and non-toxic products.  We use Shaklee's Gentle Wash for Maia's baths, but I've recently started using it for her baby wipes too.

When I first heard that Sharon, from Parents of a Dozen was making her own wipes, I thought it would be too complicated, too messy, or just plain ineffective.  What I've found is that not only is it easy and work just as well as a wipe from a package, it's WAY cheaper!

Sure it's easy to buy a package of wipes at the store but they're LOADED with chemicals - just like the baby shampoos.  I used to buy the "natural" wipes thinking I was doing a good job as a mom.  They cost more than the regular wipes, but they were "natural" and I wanted to do what was best for The Bee.  It turns out that the word "natural" can be used by any company on any product.  There are no standards or regulations for the use of the word.  It turns out I was paying extra for wipes that had just as many chemicals and toxins as the regular wipes.

So which chemicals can baby wipes contain?  Formaldehyde, for starters.  Remember from my baby shampoo post that formaldehyde is a known cancer-causing agent.  Wipes can also contain propylene glycol, which damages cell membranes and can lead to rashes, dry skin, and surface damage of the skin.  They can also contain bronopol, which was recently classified as a dangerous substance in Europe, and DMDM hydantoin.

After reading that, I didn't want to use the wipes on my own skin…let alone Maia's!

So I decided to make my own.  And I'm so glad I did!

I bought a container with a locking lid from a German store.  The container is BPA free - remember to verify this fact before you buy one!  (BPA is another chemical in many of the plastics we use on a daily basis.  It acts similarly to estrogen when ingested in the body and has been shown to cause a number of health risks - especially in children.)

I also bought a roll of Bounty Paper Towels at the commissary.  The roll cost me $1.29 and has 100 sheets.  The roll is a Select-A-Size and I would recommend this for anyone who wants to make their own wipes.  (Select-A-Size means each sheet is narrower and they end up being the perfect size for baby wipes.)  You'll also need thick paper towels, so don't buy the generic, cheapest roll!  You'll regret it later when you go to change a poopie diaper!

You're going to cut your roll of paper towels in half, so just make sure a half will fit in the container you've chosen.  My container was a 2 liter container - but I think in America you'll need to look for a 3 or 4 quart size.  (Oh how I wish we all used the same measurements!)  I just walked around the store with the roll of paper towels until I found the right size container!

To make the solution to wet the wipes, I used water, Shaklee Gentle Wash, and Shaklee Massage Oil.  You need very little wash and massage oil…so one bottle of each will last you a long time!  (I'll give you the exact numbers at the end of this post.)

Here I am getting everything ready!

You'll have to saw your paper towels in half.  I used a serrated bread knife.  Don't worry when it ends up totally shredded on one side!  You'll never even notice once you make the wipes!

I measured 2 cups of water and then added 1 teaspoon of Gentle Wash and 1/4 teaspoon of Massage Oil. Make sure you stir it up to mix it well.  Notice how I have the wipes with the shredded side down in the picture.  I would recommend doing this to make it effortless to remove each wipe.

I poured the water solution over the towels, put the lid on, and flipped the container over.  I let it sit about 10 minutes or so.  Once the water is absorbed, you're ready to go!

Pull the cardboard roll out from the center.  It'll come out surprisingly easily!

You'll pull your wipes from the inside.  I started the first one here to show you.

Here is my container of organic, non-toxic baby wipes!  In 10 minutes you can make your own too!  It will save you a TON of money and give you peace of mind.  No more cancer-causing or skin irritating chemicals for us!

Worried about what you'll do for wipes when you're out and about?  Pull off a bunch and put them in a ZipLock baggie.  You can even put them in a travel wipes case like they sell at the store.

If you're concerned about waste, you could also use cotton or flannel wipes.  Have the water solution mixed in a container at your changing table and use it to dunk your wipes.  Then just put the used wipes in your wet bag until you're ready to do laundry.

I can't believe I waited so long to do this for Maia!  I'm glad I've started making my own wipes.  Now I can even use a wipe for her hands and face without fear of what crazy chemicals she'll get in her mouth.

Want to know just how much you'll save by making your own wipes like I did?  I wanted to know too…so I did the math!

The Massage Oil costs $16.40 for members.  Remember, you only need 1/4 teaspoon per batch so each bottle will make 11,520 wipes!!

The Gentle Wash costs $19.20 for members but you'll need 2 bottles for every bottle of Massage Oil.  (One bottle of Gentle Wash makes 6,120 wipes.)  Does that make sense?

2 bottle of Gentle Wash: $38.40
1 bottle of massage oil:   $16.40
50 rolls of paper towels:   $64.50
1 container for wipes:      $  5.00
-------------------------------------------------
Total:                                    $124.30

I divided the total cost of $124.30 by the number of wipes it makes (11,520) and it comes out to a grand total of $0.01 per wipe.  The average price per wipe on Amazon was $0.04.  If you saved $0.04 on 11,520 wipes, you would save $460.80!!  That's a lot of money!!

So in just a few minutes you can make your own organic wipes AND save $460.

Here are some testimonials from Shaklee members:

DIABETES TESTIMONIAL:

As you know, I am a diabetic with all the problems that go along.  One of my greatest fears is losing my legs as my grandfather lost his from diabetes.  I suffered severe neuropathy in both my legs and feet.  In addition to that, I had 3 stints put in my left leg last summer and was diagnosed with PAD.  I was experiencing severe leg cramps nightly.  Hardly a night went by when I wasn't awakened by them and had to jump out of bed and walk around.  This would happen several times a night.  Since taking Vivix, I have not been awakened a single evening with a leg cramp.  So wonderful!  And I can feel my toes again.  They no longer feel like wooden appendages down there.  Bless Shaklee and Vivix!  I now experience full nights of restful sleep.

Cathi S. Lindall, CPA

ARTHRITIS PAIN:

I'm a person who has used Shaklee vitamins as well as their business plan to improve all elements of my health profile since 1985.  I am now 72 and have been experiencing an elevated amount of joint, muscle, and back pain.  It has grown over the past several years to aggravating proportions effecting sleep and most movement.  I was using up to 16 Pain Complex tablets a day to control this growing pain.  It worked to quench the pain but the pain itself showed no signs of letting up.  Then, in early August, Shaklee Corporation introduced VIVIX, a fabulous new longevity tonic with resveratrol and super-grape extracts.
I actually began taking Vivix while attending the convention in New Orleans.  It is now September 15th and I'm pain free!  I take NO Pain Complex.  I use the Prescription for Health products recommended by Dr. Jamie McManus in addition to Vivix…one teaspoon a day.  It's great to be able to move again without pain anywhere.

Martha Maxwell

COLITIS:

I suffered for many years from ulcerated colitis - an inflammatory condition of the large colon which produces burning, itching, and diarrhea.  I watched my diet very carefully and added the Shaklee supplements that are important for healthy digestion along with the Vitalizer.  My condition improved, but as soon as I would eat sugar or any gluten, I would again suffer a great deal of pain and diarrhea.
I began taking VIVIX and noticed that day by day the inflammation was less and less.  All the symptoms associated with the disease were gone in 8 days.  Vivix has also given me a great deal of energy, my brain works better, and I feel younger.  Vivix has changed my life as I suffered for many years.  Thank God for Shaklee.

Donn Mathias

NO MORE PAIN MEDS:

Tom and I have been on Vivix for 1 week and 2 days.  After about 5 days, Tom noticed that his ankles no longer hurt.  He had broken them both as a youth playing sports.  Tom is 65 and arthritis hit his ankles this year.  He had to get up and take pain meds so he could sleep.  After taking Vivix for just 5 days, he no longer needs pain meds to sleep.

Homemade Baby Food

Pin It I've recently had a lot of new moms and moms-to-be asking me about making baby food.  I thought I would share with all of you since it's a great way to save money while also being conscious of what your baby is eating.

When I was pregnant I registered for a Beaba Babycook…and I'm so glad I did!!  Making baby food without it is absolutely possible, but I love the convenience of having an "all-in-one" appliance.  If you don't have a Beaba (or something like it), you'll need a way to steam your meals and then you'll need a small food processor to purée them.  The benefits of the Beaba is the liquids are reserved so if you need to thin the purée you can use the liquids from the food you just steamed - not just plain water or formula.  Vitamins and minerals are in that liquid, along with lots of flavor.

The Beaba is available on Amazon.com and I'm sure many baby stores.
From fruits and veggies, to chicken, fish, and beef, you can steam and purée any number of foods.  There are many reasons why some moms are choosing to make their own baby food.

Here are 5 reasons I chose to make Maia's food:
  1. It's cheaper than buying jars of baby food.  You can freeze baby food into individual servings for months, which means you can take advantage of cheap prices when fruits and vegetables are in season.  You can also buy in bulk which brings the cost down as well.
  2. When you make your own food, there are no additives or preservatives like you'll find in pre-packaged baby food.
  3. Serving your child homemade baby food means he or she will develop a taste for fresh foods.  (Have you ever tasted baby food from a jar?  I refused to serve anything to Maia that I wouldn't eat myself.)
  4. Making your own food is so much better for the environment.  Think of how much waste is created by all of the baby food packaging.  When you make your own food, you can freeze individual servings and store them in bulk.
  5. You have control over the ingredients included in each serving of baby food.  This was especially important for me because we knew Maia had an allergy, but also because I could choose ripe, organic products.

Here is a little tutorial on how I made Maia puréed zucchini and quinoa:

The Beaba is really fool-proof when it comes to steaming.  It has a "cheat sheet" that you use to decide how much water to add to the reservoir.  The steamer works until all of the water is gone and then it automatically shuts off.  To cook the zucchini, I needed to fill the water to the number "2" on the side of the bowl.  I poured it into the reservoir and then replaced the steam basket.

I pealed and diced the zucchini and added it to the basket.

I locked the lid on and turned the dial to "steam."

While the zucchini was steaming, I made the quinoa according to the directions on the bag.

When the zucchini was done, I removed the steam basket and poured the reserve liquid into a cup (in case I needed it to thin the purée) and put the cup aside.  I poured the zucchini out of the steam basket and into the food processing cup.  I added the quinoa to the zucchini.

I blended the mixture and added reserve liquid until it was the right consistency for Maia.  I served some to Maia for lunch and the rest I put into the refrigerator or freezer to serve later.

Maia absolutely LOVES quinoa and this meal was especially yummy!

Do you make your own baby food?  What is your child's favorite combination?

Veterans Day

Take a moment today to thank a Veteran.

Veterans are men and women who have fought so you can enjoy the incredible rights and freedoms today that so many others in the world only dream about.  They volunteer to serve their country and defend its Constitution.  They do it without big paychecks and spend many days, months, and even years away from their families.  While you have the day off today many Veterans currently serving do not.  So take the time to say "thank you" for what so many Americans take for granted.

Organizing Christmas Gifts {and a free printable}

Pin It How do you organize your Christmas gifts?  Maia is still too young to be searching for gifts, so I keep them in plain sight!  We have a finished basement and I keep them all together down there.  Each time I buy something, it goes in the pile so I can keep track of everything.  As we get closer to Christmas, I'll wrap and sort them all.

We have to be really organized for holidays and birthdays because we have to mail everything back to the States.  We don't have a 'normal' Christmas where we all exchange gifts on Christmas morning.  Since we live overseas, we have to mail our gifts to family and friends well before December 25th.  Each year the United States Postal Service sets dates for us to use as a reference, so we make sure our gifts don't arrive after Christmas!

This year, we have to mail everything by December 10th.  This is the date for Priority Mail going to or from an APO to the States.  We always ship Priority mail, so it will be sent on a plane.  If we send or receive a package that is sent Parcel Post, it comes on a ship and can take up to 3 months to arrive.  It's incredibly frustrating and almost never worth the wait.

So we end up with almost an entire month less to do our Christmas shopping.  We need to be organized and I spend a lot of time brainstorming gifts so there's no last-minute stress of trying to get gifts out on time.  I made a simple gift organizer to help me keep track of each gift recipient, the gifts we've purchased, and how much we've spent.  I also use this list to brainstorm the gifts I would like to buy.  I put a star next to the ones I've brainstormed so I can easily keep track of the ones I've purchased and the ones I still need to get.

I'm in an organizing mood!  There'll be more organizational tools coming soon!!

Baby Shampoo and Formaldehyde

There was an article published in Forbes on November 1st.  Did you read it?  It's nothing new, but I'm still fuming about it.  If you have children in your life that you care about, you NEED to hear about this.

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is pushing Johnson and Johnson to reformulate their products.  Johnson and Johnson recently ranked the most trusted brand in America in a Forbes survey - and yet most Americans don't know that their baby shampoo contains not one, but TWO known carcinogens: formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane.

What's worse is these products are being sold in the US, Canada, and China, but NOT in other countries!  (They are receiving a safer, formaldehyde-free shampoo.)  When challenged, do you know what J and J said?  In a statement released on November 1st in response to the report, J and J said they are no longer introducing new products with formaldehyde-releasing preservatives.  They also said they have reduced their use of the chemical by 60 percent in the US market and 33 percent globally over the past few years.

Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy, doesn't it?

The statement also said, "We know that some consumers are concerned about formaldehyde, which is why we offer many products without formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, and are phasing out these types of preservatives in our baby products worldwide."

Their "natural" baby products cost double the price of their cancer-causing products, by the way.

Their "natural" products also contain fragrances, which are almost always accompanied by phthalates.  Phthalates help fragrances last longer and since fragrances are considered proprietary, companies do not have to disclose what is actually in them.  Phthalates are suspected carcinogens and hormone disruptors that are linked to reproductive disorders.  So it seems that even the "natural" choice, isn't so natural.

I'd like to know if the people at Johnson and Johnson use their carcinogenic products on their own children.  I'd be willing to bet they don't.

And as far as their "natural" products go - they can keep them.  I refuse to spend my hard earned money supporting a company that still knowingly endangers children.  The most trusted brand in America is exposing our children to known cancer-causing chemicals daily…and has been for years!

When I first learned that I was pregnant, my sister-in-law helped me a lot.  She had a young daughter and had already done a lot of research on toxic products and their safer alternatives.  I was lucky and had a lot of information already waiting for me so I could choose products that were safe for Maia.

A year and a half later and we're converting our house into a safe, non-toxic environment for Maia and ourselves.  We use Shaklee baby products in our home.  I know that Maia will never be exposed to carcinogens in her bath.

What do you think about Johnson and Johnson's blatant disregard for the health of our children?   Pin It

Visit to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center

Pin It Today Maia has a follow-up swallow study at Landstuhl.  Her first swallow study was done at Children's Hospital Boston back in July.  We were planning on doing her follow-up at Children's as well, but our insurance will not cover our travel expenses.  We are hopeful that she will have out-grown the issue and we can close this chapter in our lives without having to make a return trip to the States.  If she swallows without aspiration, we are all set!

If she is still aspirating thin liquids, however, we'll have to make an appointment in Boston to see three different specialists.  She'll have a visit with each and then, while under anesthesia, all three will scope her to see if there is a physical cause for her aspiration.  Obviously we don't want her to have to go through the procedure, so we're hoping today that we don't see any choking.

So as you Americans are waking up and reading this post, we'll already be at our appointment with the radiologist and speech pathologist.  The actual procedure is quick and painless and will last only a minute or two.  Maia will sit on the x-ray table in a car seat and they'll offer her the barium prepared to different thicknesses.  As she drinks, they'll be watching and filming a video of the continuous x-ray.  At Children's in July, they could see the thin liquid as she aspirated (basically it went down the "wrong pipe.")

I am praying that tomorrow I can write and say that Maia did great!  She is such an amazing little girl and we would love for her to move past all of her infant issues as she heads towards her 1st Birthday.

Thank you for thinking of her today.

UPDATE (11/4/11):  We met with the Speech and Language Pathologist at Landstuhl yesterday.  Maia had her modified barium swallow study and everything went GREAT!!  She drank the thin liquids with absolutely no problems this time!  The SLP explained that a lot of children with reflux also have issues swallowing.  The continuous reflux irritates and inflames the throat and makes it hard for them to feel the liquid, so they often choke on it.  Now that Maia's reflux is under control (without meds!) she can feel the liquids and swallow appropriately.

We are so incredibly relieved!!  One by one we are making our way through all of the issues poor Maia has had.  The next big obstacle will be tackled after her first birthday: soy and dairy.  Well, I guess that's two obstacles!  We have to wait a little longer and then we will slowly introduce them, one at a time, to see if she is still allergic.  We'll keep you posted!

Goodbye Fat Pants!

Pin It Today is the start of the Healthiest Loser Cinch Challenge and I'm PUMPED!  I've been trying unsuccessfully to lose my pregnancy weight for exactly 11 months.  I gained an astounding 52 pounds when I was pregnant and I was already about 14 pounds heavier than I had been less than a year earlier.

Think I'm exaggerating?  Take a look at these photos:

Both of these photos were taken in August 2009.  I weighed 138 pounds and was wearing a size 6.

This photo was taken in December 2010.  Maia was about 3 weeks old.  I weighed 204 pounds when Maia was born.  I'm not sure how much I weighed here, but I'm guessing I was around 185 pounds.  You can totally see it in my face and in my belly!!  I still look really pregnant!  (My dad had this picture as his desktop background!  I saw it when we were visiting in July and I just about DIED!  Needless to say, I changed the picture FAST!)

This picture was taken in mid-April.  I'm wearing my maternity pants.  Yup, that's right.  Maia was 4 1/2 months old and I was still wearing maternity sizes.  I was mortified to be seen around in stretchy jeans 4 months after Maia was born, so I went out and bought a normal pair of jeans that fit.  Unfortunately, they were the epitome of "fat pants" and I didn't feel much better wearing them!

I have ZERO pictures of me wearing those jeans.  It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that I didn't exactly like the way I looked!  I've taken as few pictures as possible this past year.  It's really a shame, but can you blame me?

Now I fit back into my own "fat pants" - a size 12.  I feel a lot better but I still don't have much else that fits.  When I lost the weight in 2009 I donated almost all of my "fat" clothes.  Now I'm left with a few things here and there that fit, but that doesn't mean I like the way I look wearing them.  I can still picture how they looked before I got pregnant and that's how I want them to fit again.

So today is the beginning of the end for my "fat pants," once and for all.

I have everything I need for the next month and I'm so excited!!  I love the products, so this doesn't feel like a diet.  Normally, once I decide to commit to a diet, I'm filled with dread leading up to the start date.

This time, I'm ready.

Not only do I have delicious weight loss products, but I also have an incredible support group.  I'll be blogging about my journey to lose 15 pounds during a holiday season that generally adds weight.

Here are my stats as of today:

Weight: 165.0
Muscle: 94.8
Body Fat: 39.5%

Do you want to join me and head towards your healthy goal weight?  I'd love to help you shed those pesky pounds and inches for good.  Leave me a comment or email me and I'll help you get started!

By January 31, 2012 I'll be back in my skinny jeans!  What about you?
