Weekly Challenge: Recipe Binder (and free printables!)

Today is the start of our first Weekly Challenge (and my first Linky Party!)

I have a few projects around the house that I want need to get done.  I love to be organized, but it's definitely something that I have to work at each and every day!  My first challenge is to create a recipe binder.  I've had one for years, but it tends to get abused.  When I started my baking craze, I had to separate my binders into two: one for meals and one for desserts.  I love to collect recipes from the internet and from magazines, but they needed a place to go where they could be used and enjoyed.

Here is my finished product:

I put each of my recipes in a page protector, so they won't get ruined if something splatters on the recipe while I'm cooking.  I've had a really hard time with index tabs, though.  The page protectors and dividers are the same width…so you can't see the tabs.  It always drove me crazy!!  So I decided to make my own tabs and I'll share them with you!

Ready to get started?

Gather your supplies:

*binder
*page protectors
*tabs (or printable tabs below)
*clear packing tape
*recipes

Gather your recipes and organize them by category.  Here are my categories so you can get an idea:

breakfast, bread/muffins, starters/dips, soups, salads, sides, pasta, beef, pork, poultry, vegetarian, other, beverages, sandwiches, icings, cookies, cakes, pumpkin, apple, cupcake, and references.

I left out seafood…did you notice?  Much to my husband's chagrin, I do not eat seafood.  Actually, he doesn't care that I don't eat it, but the result is that I don't cook it.  And THAT'S what makes him sad!
I actually have 2 binders - 1 for meals and another for desserts.  I love baking and have lots of recipes.  (My husband loves to cook and in a perfect world he'd be home to cook dinner and I'd make dessert!  Alas, we're lucky if he's even home lately to eat dinner, so we'll just take what we can get for now!)  You can see that my binders weren't exactly organized!

If you want to use my tabs, cut them out and pull aside enough page protectors for each tab.

Using the packing tape, attach one tab to each sheet.  I spaced them out evenly, using 5 in a row.

I also use a free recipe reference printable from i{heart}organizing.  See it in the photo above?  I have a pretty big collection of cookbooks and have trouble remembering which recipe came from which book.  On this page you can list them all as a reference so you're not helplessly searching through each of your cookbooks.

Now, doesn't this look better?

Free printable tabs can be found HERE.  I included a few blank tabs too, in case there's a category you'd like that I didn't use.

*UPDATED: I also have a 2012-13 FREE calendar available!  Read about organizing my family binder HERE.

  1. I don't even want to show you my (shameless, pathetic excuse of a) binder. Maybe during tax season I can make it my project to be redesigned. Then when tax season is done we could even do a recipe exchange... ;)

  8. The binder looks wonderful, I fell in love with the tabs as soon as I saw them. I'm a bit of a perfectionist and don't have the best writing so was wondering if you'd have tabs but with editable functions? My email is askforlisa@yahoo.ca or askforlisa@gmail.com

  10. It's a little late now, but they make extra wide tab pages that are made to be wider than page protectors! :( Thanks for your great ideas though! I have a large collection of recipe books and I need to get all of my favorite recipes out of all of them. Love your printables!

  11. This is exactly what I have been looking for! I try to be organized but fall short when it comes to recipes. Mine are written in notebooks, on my Pinterest boards, and in random cookbooks and I can never remember which ones. School starts back in a month and this will be my first project when I don't have to spend my days refereeing arguments between my 10 year old and 11 year old!

    1. Hi Leslie!
I'm so glad this is useful for you! I've found that I want to cook more now that I have everything neat and organized in one spot! Plus, I can be more creative and cook different things if I have a variety of recipes to choose from in the binder!
Once you're done, share your binder with us at https://www.facebook.com/ShakleeAdventure. We'd love to see!

  13. I have had a recipe binder for years now. I made a cover for mine out of fabric that matches my kitchen curtains and appliance covers. My favorite recipes I made into a scrapbook page with pictures of the person that gave me the recipe. On some pages I would add the scrap of paper that it was jotted down on, plus the printed off one, so that I have a sample of "Great Grandmothers" or whomever's handwriting. That way it is more like an heirloom book that I can pass down to my grandchildren. I have pocket dividers for the "wanna try" recipes. Pockets for canning labels etc. We use this book all of the time so all my pages are covered with page protectors as well.

    2. My kids (9yo & 6yo twins) have been begging me to make them a recipe box with their fave recipes. I really didn't want to hand write all of them but was going to make them their own binders.

My Little Corner...I love the idea of scrapbooking the recipe! I have tons of pics of the kids helping me make various things (like salsa) and I can print their pic on the paper with their recipe then spruce it up with stickers and such. Thanks!!!

I have some blank tabs included in the file, so you can write in your separate category. Unfortunately I don't have one that can be edited. I'm sorry!!

  18. What do you do about the recipes that are not a whole page long? I tried this once, and had too much trouble with the smaller recipes that didn't take up a whole page. I ended up gluing them on a paper and inserting them in the page protector. It wasn't ideal. Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks!

    1. Kathy,
I cut the recipes out (or even fold the paper if it's from the internet and I'm feeling lazy!) I try to put recipes that aren't a full page together. So, for example, if you have two recipes that you've found or printed that only take up 1/2 a page, put them in the page protector so they are one above the other. It should be a tight enough fit in the plastic to prevent them from moving around. If they're narrow recipes (usually from a magazine) I put them side-by-side. They don't always fit perfectly - there may be some gaps - but it's the easiest way to put them all in and save some space! Hope that helps!!
      Andrea :)

  21. maia, this comes at a perfect time...have just finished expanding my binder and creating more than the 5 categories that came with the pretty recipe keeper my aunt gave me. Instead of writing down a reference to another cookbook, i copy the page for my time-tested and family favorites, slip the page into a protector and put it in my binder. it's always my go-to place, so i put the family faves in there!

I've also created a second binder, because I love to cull recipes from magazines or online. I put them all into one VERY LARGE binder until I try it out. If it's voted a "keeper" by my kids, it gets moved into the family faves binder, which has the same sections. it's really helping me to decide which recipes I should keep and which ones i' should let go. because no matter how cool a recipe is, if my family (of 5 kids and a "discriminating" husband) isn't going to eat it, why make it?

  22. Maia, I have made a number of recipe binders and have found that using plastic file folders with tabs works really well for separating the sections. they are wider than the page protectors and have pockets for you to stick recipes into, until you have a chance to get them organized in the binder.

  31. This is great! One easy solution to the tab problem is putting page dividers (the entire sheet/binder kind) inside of a page protector and just cut slits for the tabs. Everything's perfectly spaced and there's no mess or tape to deal with. This is a little trick I learned as a social worker to keep my clients organized.
